Tips for Baking Bread to Perfection

Baking your own bread at home can be a delightful experience. However, achieving the perfect result requires a few special tricks. Here are some tips to ensure your bread turns out perfectly :

1. Use an Oven Thermometer

Not all ovens provide the same temperature, even when set to the same number. Using an oven thermometer will help you accurately monitor and maintain the desired temperature. It’s easy to use—just hang it inside the oven. Be sure to place it in the right spot! The ideal position is on the middle rack.

2. Preheat the Oven Before Adding Dough

Always preheat your oven before placing the dough inside. This ensures the oven reaches the desired temperature.

When the dough enters a hot oven, the high temperature on its surface causes it to rise quickly, resulting in a soft and airy texture. Conversely, if the oven isn’t hot enough, the dough may rise too slowly, producing bread that is dense, dry, and crumbly.

Some ovens take 15–30 minutes to reach the correct temperature. Don’t rely solely on the oven’s beep signal; use an oven thermometer to verify the temperature before baking.

3. Add Water to the Oven

When placing the dough in the oven, add a bowl of water at the bottom of the oven. This trick creates steam, which helps the bread rise better and develop a golden, crispy crust instead of becoming dry and hard.

4. Experiment with Scoring Techniques

Scoring involves making cuts on the surface of the dough before baking. This not only adds an artistic touch but also helps the dough expand properly and prevents it from cracking in undesirable places. Use a sharp knife or razor for the best results.

5. Master Baking with Your Oven

The more you use your oven, the better you’ll understand its baking tendencies. For instance, if the back of the oven browns food faster, you may need to rotate the baking tray 180° during the process.

6. Avoid Opening the Oven Too Often

You might be tempted to open the oven door to check your bread, but resist the urge! Opening the door can cause a significant drop in temperature, sometimes by as much as 25 degrees. Instead, use the oven window to monitor your baking.

7. Cool the Bread Properly

After removing the bread from the oven, let it cool on a cooling rack. This allows the trapped steam to escape, preventing the bread from becoming overly moist.

8. Regularly Clean Your Oven

A dirty oven can impact the baking process. Clean your oven periodically, especially if spills occur at the bottom. If you notice a burnt smell while baking, it’s likely due to leftover residue. Worse, the burnt aroma can seep into your baked goods.

9. Avoid Using Aluminum Foil in the Oven

You may have seen tips on social media suggesting aluminum foil to protect your oven from spills. However, avoid doing this because foil can reflect heat, causing food to bake faster and unevenly. Additionally, it can damage the oven. Instead, use silicone oven liners designed for this purpose.

10. Use Quality Ingredients

High-quality ingredients, such as active yeast and high-protein flour, will result in better-risen bread with a more delicious flavor.

For flour, we recommend the KANTIL brand from PT Manunggal Perkasa. This flour contains up to 13.5% protein, ensuring soft, airy bread with excellent texture and no denseness.
